A friend of mine remarked just yesterday how plenty of sleep makes a world of difference in his day. Specifically, he noted a higher energy level and a more positive outlook. Conversely, many of us are well aware of how awful we feel when we haven’t had enough sleep.
In deep, dreamless sleep, electroencephalograph (eeg) machines show our brains producing brainwaves very slowly oscillating between the frequencies of 0 and 4 hertz. Brainwaves of this frequency range are known as delta brainwaves. All brainwaves are associated with the production of certain body chemicals. In the case of delta brainwaves body chemistry includes the production of DHEA (a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands) and human growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland.
DHEA (that’s short for Dehydroepiandrosterone) production begins to slow down after the decade of one’s 20’s. Perhaps that is connected with the old saying that age 30 was “over the hill”. In any case, DHEA supplements are used to slow or reverse aging and to protect against certain health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and osteoporosis. Research evidence as to the effectiveness of these supplements is contradictory.
Human growth hormone is also involved in slowing aging because it stimulates cell growth and regeneration. HGH also called simply GH is a prescribed medication for growth problems in children and adults. It has been used illegally in competitive sports.
Deprivation and/or interruption of delta brainwave sleep has been associated with fibromyalgia, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia and muscle pain and fatigue. It is worth noting that alcohol, the traditional “night cap” decreases delta wave sleep.
Infants spend much time in the delta brainwave state. It is also said that if you can manage to remain conscious in this state, you will reach a very high meditative or shamanistic consciousness. Very low carbohydrate diets have been shown to increase delta brainwave activity.
Audio frequency recordings may be used to enter the delta brainwave state of deep sleep, prevent fibromyalgia (thought to be caused by alpha brainwave interruptions of delta brainwaves) and to safely and naturally stimulate production of DHEA and HGH.
